Camp Sunrise Day Camp
|
Camp Sunrise Day Camp operates
under the philosophy that each child is unique...having individual
interests, skill and levels of confidence. As educators, we
are aware of the effect of "mass" programming on
a child's individuality and creativity. Therefore, at Sunrise
we strive to serve the needs of the individual camper, both
through our individual groupings and our programming. With
a different Theme every week, children
always have a new experience to look forward to. |
Tribe Groupings
In keeping with a small camper to counselor
ratio, within each division of the camp, our campers are
assigned to individual tribes, according to grade in September.
The number of tribes depends on the number of children enrolled.
Each tribe has its own counselor and tribe area, meeting
three times a day. The tribe area itself reflects the enthusiasm
and creativity of its individual members. The tribe lunches
as a unit, enabling the counselor to interact with campers
and help resolve any problems that may develop. Tribe spirit
runs high during group games and special events. |

Junior Tribes (Ages 4,
5, 6)
This is an outstanding program for children
ages 4, 5 and 6. In Junior Camp, children enjoy all of the
senior camp activities including gymnastics, archery, horseback
riding, and canoeing. Our campers participate in special
events such as the Water Carnival, Olympics, Camp Carnival
and Halloween Week. This is a true camp program that is
under the direction of a certified teacher. Our campers
have a well-planned program that allows them to grow both
socially and cooperatively. The Junior Camp is a very special
place where a child will enjoy the wonders of camping. |
Senior Tribes (Ages 7-12)
We believe that under the proper guidance,
our campers should play an integral part in planning their
camp day. Our specialized modular programming encourages
camper independence, decision-making and growth, in a pressure-free,
supervised environment. During scheduled activity time periods,
campers are offered a variety of activities and are free
to select one which interests them. The only agreement in
effect is that once a choice is made, it must be maintained
for that period. |

Teen Tribes (Ages
13-14)
Adolescents need experiences which reflect
their maturity levels, as well as stimulate their deeper
interests. The teen tribe remains as a unit, planning most
of their own activities, and participating in special trips
and responsibilities at camp. They assist in the productions
of various special events, camp "guest" appearances,
carnivals, etc. |
Activity Periods
Various activities are offered, some on a daily
basis, others on a rotating basis. The Program Director coordinates
all activity offerings, presenting a balanced schedule over the
course of a week. Special events such as Camp Carnival and Camp
Olympics, for example, are scheduled for an afternoon, at least
one event each camp week.

The Camp Day
Campers arrive at our grounds at 9:30am. Children
assemble in their appropriate meeting place to greet their tribe
counselors. Attendance is taken, and lunches are collected and
stored. The Junior Camp begins their day of planned activity,
while the Senior Camp starts the first activity period. The Program
Director and activity counselors inform the campers of the available
activities, and the campers regroup with each activity counselor
for the remainder of that time period. At lunchtime, the children
return to their tribe area to eat and discuss the morning. After
lunch, all tribes meet at Sing-A-Long for camp songs, entertainment
and fun. The afternoon activities are then announced, and children
once again choose one. The tribes regroup for Canteen, attendance
is taken, and they are dismissed to the busses at 3:30pm.
What to Bring
Campers should arrive with a bag lunch, swimsuit
and towel. Parents should observe food safety precautions in preparing
summer lunches. A beverage is provided at camp. On rainy days,
campers should dress accordingly, wearing protective footwear
and light rain gear. ALL ARTICLES OF CLOTHING SHOULD BE MARKED
WITH THE CHILD'S NAME TO INSURE PROPER RETURN.
Waterfront Program
Sunrise offers a full Red-Cross instructional swim
program. All instruction is done in an Olympic size pool. campers
are tested on their first day of swim instruction to determine
their swim level. A water safety instructor, senior lifesavers
and water safety aids are in full charge of the waterfront and
pool for swimming and boating.
|
Junior Camp-Instructional
swim is a scheduled, daily part of the younger camper's
program. All Junior camp staff accompany their tribes
to the pool. CAMPERS ARE NOT FORCED OR INTIMIDATED into
participating in swimming activities. Gentle encouragement
and support is offered to those campers with water anxieties.
Senior Camp-Instructional swim is offered
as a daily scheduled activity for those campers wishing
to learn or advance in their swimming and will make it
a part of their camp day. A general free swim is also
offered each day for relaxation. No formal classes take
place during general swim. Boating is offered to those
campers who have attained satisfactory Red Cross swim
levels. A boating activity counselor supervises this program. |
